Site Speed & Conversion: The Statistics That Matter for Shopify
Most page speed statistics in ecommerce were copied from blog to blog until nobody remembers where they came from. This page lists only the findings that trace back to verifiable research, shows the revenue math they imply for a typical Shopify store, and explains how to measure the speed–conversion relationship in your own real-user data.
The Verified Statistics
Only a handful of site speed conversion rate statistics survive source-checking, and this list is deliberately short because we exclude anything we cannot attribute. Every entry below has a stable anchor so you can cite it directly.
- Cutting store load time by 1 second can increase conversions by up to 7%. Source: Akamai research. This is the most-cited defensible figure in the field, and note the phrasing: up to 7%. It is a ceiling observed in research, not a guarantee for every store.
- Every 100 milliseconds of load time is worth roughly 1.1% of conversion. Source: Deloitte/eBay research. This finding matters because it shows the relationship is roughly linear at small increments — you do not need a dramatic overhaul to see movement. Shaving 300–400ms is a measurable event, not a rounding error.
- Google's Core Web Vitals thresholds: LCP ≤ 2.5s, INP ≤ 200ms, CLS ≤ 0.10. Source: Google. Critically, these are measured at the 75th percentile of real users, not in a lab test. - Mobile is typically the majority of Shopify traffic — and the slowest experience. The device class that carries most of your revenue opportunity is also the one with the weakest hardware and the least reliable network, which is why mobile dominates the rest of this page.
Why We Exclude the Famous Stats You've Seen Elsewhere
Most page speed statistics ecommerce blogs repeat cannot be traced to a real study, so this page leaves them out. The pattern is always the same: a figure from a vendor deck or a decade-old study gets quoted, the quote gets quoted, the context and date fall away, and eventually the number circulates with no source at all — or the "source" is another blog citing another blog. Some widely repeated abandonment percentages and bounce multipliers fail exactly this test. That does not mean they are false; it means they are unverifiable, and a reference page that mixes verified and unverifiable numbers is useless as a reference. If a statistic is not listed above, we could not confirm it — and we would rather publish four numbers you can defend in a meeting than forty you cannot.
The Math of a Speed Improvement (Worked Example)
For a mid-size Shopify store, a conversion lift in the range Akamai measured pencils out to roughly $100,000 a year — here is the arithmetic, fully transparent. This is an illustration of the math, not a prediction for your store. Your traffic, baseline conversion rate, and how much speed you actually gain all change the outcome.

Two things make this illustration useful. First, the input assumptions are ordinary — nothing in that table requires an exceptional store. Second, the gain is recurring: unlike an ad campaign, a faster store converts better on every session, every month, without additional spend. Even if your store captures half the illustrated lift, the return against typical speed-optimization costs is large.

Why Mobile Is the Biggest Lever
Mobile is where speed work pays off most because it is typically the majority of Shopify traffic and almost always the slowest experience — so the average visitor's reality is your mobile reality. Because Core Web Vitals are judged at the 75th percentile of real users, a mostly-mobile audience means your scores are effectively set by phones on cellular connections, not by anyone's office desktop.
Mobile is also where the common Shopify slowdowns bite hardest. Unoptimized images consume constrained bandwidth; missing lazy-loading forces phones to download below-the-fold media before it is needed; render-blocking theme scripts and third-party app JavaScript stall weaker CPUs far longer than desktop ones; and layout shift from media without reserved space is most disruptive on a small screen where everything is above the fold. How to Measure Your Own Speed–Conversion Relationship
The only speed–conversion relationship that matters is the one in your own real-user data, and you can measure it by bucketing sessions by load speed and comparing conversion rates. Industry averages tell you the direction; your data tells you the size. Here is the method:
- Collect real-user Core Web Vitals (RUM), not lab scores. Lab tests are useful for debugging, but conversion happens in field conditions — real devices, real networks.
- Bucket sessions by experienced LCP — for example ≤ 2.5s, 2.5–4s, and > 4s — and compare conversion rate across buckets, splitting mobile and desktop.
- Read the gap, not the absolute numbers. If your fast bucket converts meaningfully better than your slow one, that gap is your store-specific version of the Akamai and Deloitte findings — and your business case for fixing it. Be aware of confounders: returning customers often browse faster pages from cache and convert better anyway, so treat this as strong directional evidence rather than a controlled experiment.
- Fix what you actually control. On Shopify, TTFB is handled by Shopify's hosting and checkout scripts are locked by Shopify — your levers are theme scripts, third-party app JavaScript, images, lazy-loading, and layout stability.
